The Monster foes of Dr. Who

As a child growing up in the 70's my earliest memory of monsters was those foes of Dr Who who beamed through our TV sets weekly on a Saturday night, we may have watched from behind the sofa or the braver a ones with just a cushion to shield their eyes and hopefully hide ourselves from these monster beings but still we were hooked and couldn't miss an episode.

In 2005 the series was once again dusted off and resurrected for a new generation of audience as well as fans of long standing. A long with the good Doctor himself the new series brought back his foes both new and old. Here are just a few of my favourites.

 The Master / Missy

How could a new series not eventually bring back one of the Doctors both oldest friends and well as oldest foe. As another Time Lord from the planet of Gallifrey and therefore also able to regenerate the Doctor and the Master have occasionally been on the same side but mostly they have battled each other through out time. The Doctor on the side of good and the Master on the side of chaos.

Derek Jacobi played the Master first in new generation of Dr Who, he was in just one episode before quickly regenerating in the form of Jon Simm's who brought a fresh evil to the role. As always the Doctor gained the upper hand and it seemed the Master met his end at last but as those of us from the 70's knew, the Master was very apt at reappearing when you least expected it.

The next time we got to meet 'The Master' it became obvious he'd undergone his most dramatic regeneration yet as he came back as 'Missy' with an lovely Mary Poppins themed outfit complete with umbrella yet in her heart was still the love of chaos and a will to create evil havoc rather than sing any jolly songs or jump through chalk paintings.

Foes or Friends? You can never quite tell with The Doctor and The Master / Missy  but they seem forever bound to meet in battle.

The Daleks / Cybermen

No series of Dr Who is ever complete without another outing for two more of the doctors arch villains both made of metal with mutated beings within. They've come along way from the time of the 70's with new outer shells and polished look. The Daleks also acquired a new ability, the one thing a child in the 70's could be comforted by is that Daleks could not climb stairs so going to bed was always safe, yet that safety net has been taken away from a new generation of children as the Daleks had learned how to fly when they came back to our TV screens.

My favourite episode of all has been where these two metal monsters came face to face in the  Battle of Canary Wharf episode. The Daleks rejected the Cybermen's offer of ruling earth between them and they went to battle instead. Leading to these classic exchanges.

Cyberman: Our technologies are compatible, though your design is less elegant.
Dalek Thay: Deleks have no concept of elegance!
Cyberman: This is obvious.

Cyber Leader: Daleks, be warned. You have declared war upon the Cybermen.
Dalek Sec:This is not war - this is pest control!
Cyber Leader: We have five million Cybermen. How many are you?
Dalek Sec: Four.
Cyber Leader: You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?
Dalek Sec: We would destroy the Cybermen with one Dalek! You superior in only one respect.
Cyber Leader: What is that?
Dalek Sec: You are better at dying.

Weeping Angels
Of all the monsters that have returned with the new Dr. Who though it is one of the newer creations that has given rise to the most unnerving of episodes. The Weeping Angles first appeared in the episode of  'Blink' they are also known as The Lonely Assassins. They are as the doctor puts it "The only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely". As quantum locked creatures their greatest disguise is also their one weakness. They can not exist when looked at, not by anyone, even their own kind and they turn to stone as a natural defense but look away and they are fast. They kill you by transporting you back in time and then use the energy of  your future life you've lost.

There is no need to be frightened though, because as we all know it's only a TV show and what does it matter that when you go out you suddenly start to notice just how many stone angel statues there are around you. They are only stone after all...aren't they?

"Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck." ~ The Doctor.

The BBC has released an intriguing new image from the 50th anniversary special that features Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt. The image also shows two damaged Daleks and the words ‘Bad Wolf’ scrawled on what appears to be a wall… We’ll have to wait until the special premieres on 23 November to discover the full significance of these elements!

Press Release:

50 YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO CULMINATING IN ‘THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR’

The countdown starts here as the BBC reveals its plans to take over TV and radio to mark the Doctor’s 50th anniversary

With special programmes planned across the BBC the celebrations will peak on 23 November with the anniversary episode, revealed as ‘The Day of the Doctor’. Starring Matt Smith, David Tennant, Jenna Coleman with Billie Piper and John Hurt, the special for BBC One has been confirmed as feature length with 75 minutes of adventure.

BBC Two will broadcast a number of new commissions, focusing on telling the story behind the show.
For one night only, Professor Brian Cox will take an audience of celebrity guests and members of the public on a journey into the wonderful universe of the Doctor, from the lecture hall of the Royal Institution of Great Britain

In an hour-long special, BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show presents ‘Me, You and Doctor Who’ , with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama, arguing that it’s one of the most important cultural artefacts of modern Britain.

BBC Two wraps up its coverage with the previously announced ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ (1x90mins), which will tell the story of the genesis of Doctor Who and the many personalities involved. Written by Mark Gatiss the drama stars; David Bradley and Brian Cox.

There will also be programmes across CBBC with 12 Again bringing together CBBC’s super fan Chris Johnson, impressionist Jon Culshaw, Tommy Knight (Luke Smith), Warwick Davis (Porridge), Neve McIntosh (Madame Vastra), Dan Starkey (Strax) Louise Jameson (Leela) and the Seventh Doctor; Sylvester McCoy, to share their memories of watching TV’s top Time Lord when they were young.

Blue Peter will launch an exciting new competition giving viewers aged between six and fourteen the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the iconic science fiction series. Two live Blue Peter specials will see presenters Barney, Lindsey and Radzi joined by aliens and monsters, with viewers challenging Matt Smith to answer their Doctor Who questions.

BBC Three will be home to several exciting entertainment commissions. Audiences will be encouraged to get involved and vote in ‘Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend’, as we countdown to the top Doctor Who monster.

For those less familiar with the show, ‘Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide’ will introduce fans and viewers to a wealth of archive material and act as a guide to all things Who. A further exciting commission to be announced later this year will see the celebrations finish with a bang.

BBC Radio 2 will ask ‘Who Is The Doctor?’ in a 90 minute documentary featuring newly recorded interviews and exclusive archive material. The programme will look at the lasting appeal of Doctor Who and ask how much of its continued success can be attributed to its basic formula.

In ‘The Blagger’s Guide to Doctor Who’, David Quantick will give the iconic Doctor the Blagger’s treatment. He’ll be finding out the answers to questions such as why do Americans think Tom Baker is still Doctor Who? How many Doctors have there really been? Were the Daleks really named after an encyclopaedia?

Graham Norton will be broadcasting his weekly Radio 2 show live (Saturday 23 November, 10am) from the Doctor Who Celebration in London. In a special three-hour show, Graham will take a ride in the TARDIS and will also be chatting with some of the series’ stars and fans.

Music is a key part of Doctor Who, from the famous theme tune to soaring melodies, but the show has also inspired a whole new phenomenon – Time Lord Rock (TROCK). Radio 1 will look at this genre of music inspired by the Doctor and his journeys through space and time with a 60 minute documentary.

Radio 4 Extra travels back to 1963 with a three hour special programme, ‘Who Made Who?’, to look at the world that inspired the television series. Doctor Who may have come from other times, but his roots were very much in the present of 1960s Britain. This distinctive programme combines audio from the archive, new interviews and extracts from audio versions of Doctor Who. Additionally, the station will broadcast readings and dramas featuring the great Doctor.

There will also be special content across the official website www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho and on the iPlayer.

The 12th Doctor is announced.

The 12th Doctor Who has been announced tonight as the actor Peter Capaldi. The 55-year-old Glasgow-born star will be replacing outgoing lead Matt Smith in the role. Personally I'm really happy with the choice. I think he will make a good Dr. Who and I'm glad they have gone for someone older this time.

Who will be the new Doctor Who?

The BBC are going to broadcast a special live program tonight at 7pm to unveil the new Doctor Who. As Matt Smith leaves the role he's played for past three years in the coming Christmas episode. There will be interviews during the program with current actors in the series and those from previous years. Current bookies favourites for the role are Peter Capaldi and Daniel Rigby. I'll be back later when the reveal has been announced.
